Development Of Spoken Tutorials On Health For Health Information Dissemination
Spoken tutorials are created by the Spoken Tutorial Project Group at IIT Bombay, for self-learning with usage of audio-visual screen-casts. The duration of the tutorials are usually 10-12 minutes and are available in all Indian languages. The tutorials can be downloaded and used offline without internet access. The tutorials are on exclusive breastfeeding, recipes for complementary feeding, pre-pregnancy, adolescence, nutrition during pregnancy, nutrition during lactation, junk foods & health, science of nutrition and safety & food hygiene.
These tutorials are aimed at (i) training of field health workers in remote or class-rrom training settings, (ii) training of mothers by Health workers in the field by using these videos to illustrate the practices suggested, and (iii) self-learning or continuous learning by health workers, mothers and other stakeholders.
Project Deliverables :
WIN Foundation is supporting to Spoken Tutorial Project group at IIT Bombay, to develop the following list of 5 tutorials
- Vegetarian recipes for pregnant women.
- General guidelines for complementary feeding.
- Complementary feeding for 6 to 24 month old babies.
- Magnesium rich vegetarian recipes.
- Protein rich vegetarian recipes. Other details:
- Duration of each tutorial will be 10 to 12 minutes.
- Development timeframe: July 2020 to September 2020.
- Dubbing will be done in 10 languages – Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi,Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Oriya, Assamese and Manipuri.
WIN Foundation is also involved in community level nutrition training projects, in the field, which use Spoken Tutorials. WIN Foundation has part-sponsored the Child Nutrition Lab at CTARA, IIT Bombay, a complementary project for nutrition, to provide food based local nutritive recipes, which local communities can make at home or through self-help groups.

Dr. Rupal Dalal, MD, is Director of Maternal & Child Health at SMDT and also Adjuct Faculty for Nutrition at CTARA, IIT Bombay. She has over 2 decades of experience in pediatrics and nutrition She is the principal project leader of Spoken Tutorial project
Spoken Tutorial health and nutrition project at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is an initiative that has evolved itself from the need for quality health education material which can be accessed by health care workers i.e ASHA, ANMs, medical officers. The project creates audio-video tutorials for self-learning in various domains of health. These tutorials are dubbed into 22 Indian languages for ease of adoption. Currently, this project is working on breastfeeding and nutrition series, where 38 English tutorials are already published on Spoken Tutorial website. These tutorials are also used for training 12,000 health workers in rural areas who do not have access to quality health education material and training. The project has also enabled a toll free Mother and Child Nutrition helpline number 1800 267 7782 for mothers to reach out for queries and advice on maternal nutrition, lactation and child nutrition. This project’s main aim is to reach the unreached, enabling health education and awareness for a healthy future.
